Kandy is Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, where ancient traditions and historic heritage blend with modern city life. As the island’s second-largest city, Kandy offers a wealth of cultural landmarks and experiences, making it one of the most important destinations in Sri Lanka.

At the heart of the city lies the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), the country’s most revered Buddhist shrine. Kandy is also world-famous for the vibrant Esala Perahera, a traditional festival featuring ornate elephants, drummers, dancers, and centuries-old rituals that celebrate Sri Lanka’s rich cultural identity.

Once the last royal stronghold of the Sinhalese kingdom, Kandy maintained its independence for centuries before coming under British rule in 1818.
