Negombo
Coastal Charm, Culture & Colonial Heritage
Negombo is one of the western coast’s most popular resort towns, well known for its golden beaches and relaxed coastal atmosphere. Located close to Bandaranaike International Airport, Negombo is often the first or last stop on a Sri Lanka journey, offering a perfect blend of beach life and cultural exploration.
Beyond its shoreline, Negombo is rich in religious and historical landmarks. With a strong Roman Catholic heritage, the town is often called “Little Rome”, home to numerous beautifully designed churches. At the same time, important Buddhist temples, Hindu kovils, and mosques can be found throughout the town, reflecting its cultural diversity.
Negombo also preserves visible reminders of its Portuguese and Dutch colonial past, including the historic Dutch Fort gate built in 1672. The scenic Dutch Canal, stretching over 100 kilometers and still in use today, offers a unique way to explore Negombo and its surrounding suburbs by boat.
