Udawalawe
Sri Lanka’s Elephant Safari Paradise
Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most renowned wildlife sanctuaries, best known as a true haven for wild elephants. Set against the backdrop of the Great Western mountain range and centered around the scenic Udawalawe Reservoir, the park features vast open grasslands and scrub forests ideal for wildlife viewing.
Home to over 600 elephants, Udawalawe offers some of the best elephant sightings in the world, with large herds often seen roaming freely across the plains. The park’s open terrain and sparse vegetation make it especially easy to observe elephants in their natural habitat throughout the year.
In addition to elephants, Udawalawe supports a rich variety of wildlife, including water buffalo, crocodiles, spotted deer, sambar deer, and numerous bird species. While leopards and sloth bears are present, they are more elusive, adding to the park’s sense of untamed wilderness.
